Demand Action Not Assumption

Data governance, a new term for many, is an essential requirement for quality EHRs. It is a catch-all term for the plethora of policies and procedures that guide, manage and “govern” the content of an electronic health record.
 

In a recent article, “Demand Action Not Assumption,” which appears in the June issue of Health Management Technology, HealthPort customer, Mary Reaves, RHIA, Director, Medical Information Services, Vanderbilt University Hospital, and I explore the topic of data governance and share the learning experiences of Vanderbilt Medical Center as they journey towards completely electronic environments. In addition, Mary and I discuss key pieces of a data governance plan such as:

  • Data Mapping and Data Dictionaries (Identify which systems and what data streams into the EHR.)
  • Cut and Paste Policy (Clinicians save time by cutting and pasting notes, but it must be managed.)
