ICD-10 Delayed!

Last week, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that it was proposing a delay of ICD-10 implementation for another year. Originally set to go into effect October 1, 2013, the delay would push the ICD-10 compliance date to October 1, 2014. This new date would apply to both diagnosis and procedure codes.

According to a recent American Hospital Association (AHA) member survey, 70% percent of hospitals that responded indicated that a short delay would be helpful, with a majority of that 70% stating that no more than 12 months is needed. The ADA made the below comment in their response letter to CMS regarding the proposed delay:

“The AHA supports the proposed one-year delay and urges the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to finalize its proposal soon. We strongly recommend that CMS move forward with both coding systems (CM and PCS) at the same time, and that the extra time be used to conduct extensive testing.”

Is the proposed delay of ICD-10 a welcomed announcement for your facility? Are there other pressing initiatives that you are focused on? Comment below and tell us your thoughts.  Inquiring minds want to know!

That's a pretty big invnitece to get healthcare providers to move forward with implementing EHR and other security measures for patient records. With all of the announced HIPAA audits already underway, there's no better time than now to review your policies and upgrade technology.
