Everyday Risk: Protecting Against Breach in Release of Information

Eliminating errors in the ROI process is a key HIM opportunity to protect patients and help covered entities avoid breaches, fines, penalties, and reputational harm.

Big data breaches grab the headlines, but mounting release of information requests pose everyday risks that require constant diligence.  Click here to read a recent article that appeared in the April issue of The Journal of AHIMA titled Everyday Risk: Protecting Against Breach in Release of Information. In this article, my colleague, Jan McDavid, Esq., HealthPort General Counsel, and I discuss how the increase in medical record requests brings with it increased opportunity for inadvertent privacy breaches from human error, system error, or other mishaps and how to mitigate that risk with an evaluation of policies and procedures, training and more.

Looking for more information to “connect the dots” on ROI best practices and HIPAA regulations? Be sure to check out Jan McDavid’s HIPAA News and Updates blog where she discusses news and provides tips and updates on HIPAA.
